'Fan' Going After Ignition Off-Battery Drained 850 1997

My GLT Wagon has been running fine. I got a new Interstate battery 1 month ago. Last night I cam home from driving around town and when I parked the car, I heard a fan going after I turned the ignition off. I just assumed it was the radiator fan cooling things off but still thought it was weird since this was a first and the temp. outside was 25 degrees. I checked after 1o minutes and the fan was off.

I went to start it this morning and the battery was dead. I put a charger on it and the "fan" immediately started up. I don't think I can get a charge going because it seems as if the battery charge is just running the fan. The strange thing is that it isn't the cooling fan. The fan noise is coming from somewhere around/below the air filter (below left of the battery). I'm at a loss. Anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks in advance...
