I changed the plugs, cap, rotor, and wires on my wife's '93 850 last night. Everything went well to my surprise - the car started afterwards! My question is this: After looking at the instructions in the Haynes manual I noticed that a flash shield is installed between the rotor and cap. When I removed the distributor cap, a flash shield was not present. What purpose does this item serve? and is it vital that it be installed? Someone mentioned to mee that it might serve as a protector to keep out moisture from the rotor. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
