heater/fan non working 850 1996

Hey guys
maybe you can help me out here. I got my mother a nice 96 850, which she loves but yesterday the heater just stopped working. When you first start the car everything seems to be normal untill you turn on the fan. The ac and return lights start blinking and nothing works. She's only had the car for 3 months and I hate to take it to the dealer$$$ any ideas on what could be the problem that I could fix, I will have the repair manual tomorrow for her car.
