Transmission problem/Reverse 850 1993

I just purchased this car with knowledge that the transmission would not go in reverse. I figured I would have to have it rebuilt, however after driving it home I noticed that it had no problems shifting into and forward gears. The person I bought it from said there was a sensor in the trans that needs to be replaced. Does anyone have any info on this problem?
