Questions for K&N filter owners 850

I've had my K&N air filter in my 850 Turbo for about 8,000 miles and it's been through a harsh winter full of snow, sand and sand. Also I drive on dirt roads occasionally. I took a look at the filter just to see how it was doing and saw that it was unevently dirty. This one corner about 4"x4" is caked with dirt and is black, but the rest of the filter is pretty clean. Anyone else get this uneven dirtyness in their filter? It was placed in the air box properly and was properly sealed back up with the 7 clips on the cover. Also, how often doyou guys clean your air filter?
