850 2.5 glt wont start 850

i got a nice 850 2.5 glt estate - the other morning while backing out of the drive the car stalled and would not start again - a friend said it was the spark plugs so i took them out and looked at them - and sure enough they were rather grotty - so i put in a new set that night - still no joy but now i had no spark - so i pulled off the air filter box and removed the distributer cap cleaned it and refitted - still no spark checked for spark from ht to coil lead ooops no spark there either - phoned all my volvo expert friends - "crankshaft sensor is duff" they said to a man - got a new one of those fitted it and and still no spark - ignition and fuel fault codes are 1.1.1 no fault - when i remove the lead from the crankshaft sensor i get the right fault codes - thinking of replacing the coil and amplifier now

looking for any advice
