what are the symptoms of a bad distirbutor cap/rotor??? 850

Hi
My 1994 SE 850 is now constantly misfiring. It seems to idle okay in Park but as soon I put it in Drive or Reverse it starts to sputter and misfire. I replaced the spark plugs and it drove perfectly for about 10 minutes and then started to misfire and sputter again. I checked the Distributor the cap seems fine no cracks the contacts were a bit pitted and carbonised. I cleaned that off. I checked the rotor arm it seems okay but I do not know what a good rotor brush is meant to look like. The carbon brush is just above the plastic holder. I cleaned that up and started the car again now it is even worse and misfiring in idle. Would I be correct to assume that I should get a new cap and rotor? Does anyone have a photo of a new rotor by any chance? or where I could see one? any suggestions would be great.
thanks
