850 'shuttering' and even 'bucking' at 55-70 MPH? 850 1998

I have a 98 850 non-turbo wagon that is intermittently "shuttering" and even "bucking" at 55-70 MPH. It is so severe that I'm afraid the car will even stall. There are no error codes in the computer and my usual mechanic who is excellent is stumped. I am taking it into the Volvo dealer this week but wanted to gather ideas on how severe this problem might be before goin.
