High pitched noise when steering S40-V40

Just wanted to tell you about this problem and fix:

Volvo V40 48000 miles.
I was sometimes getting a whining noise when making low-speed turns (under 25 mph). It was not continuous, I never knew when it would 'squeak' next. The car is driven moderately, not hard, over paved roads and hwys. We do have a few potholes in our area but I don't recall any drastic hits.

Took it to dealer and the SM said yes they hear the noise. There is a band-aid fix (a low cost repair that would probably not solve the problem), but the sm suggested the best solution would be to REPLACE the STEERING RACK!

Wow, that would be a big chunk of change if it was not under extended warranty.

SM said he had seen this before on a couple other V40s this year.

Good luck.
Don
