Electric Fan on 1990 Volvo 740

I'm not sure what caused this, but I recently had a problem with my electric fan. I parked the car on the street for a few hours and upon returning I found my battery completely dead. Luckily there was a autoparts store nearby and I bought a new one, but the second I hooked it up, even though the car was off, not even having the key in the ignition, the electric fan in front of the condenser switched on. It must have started running all day while I was parked. It definately wasn't like that when I got in the car in the morning, I would have heard it. The only way I was able to get it to turn off upon arriving home was to disconnect the battery. Any ideas?
