Hi,
I'm new to Volvo's. Used to drive SAABs! My recently acquired 440 has a problem when I switch off the ignition and take the key out the engine continues to run. If I stall it then the lights in the instrument panel stay lit. The accessories and fans switch off with the key. I disconnected the ignition wires inder the steering wheel and it still runs. I checked the relays and they seem OK. A way of switching everything off (reset) is to disconnect one of the 2 red wires that comes from the + of the battery and then connecting it up again. I think it may be a grounding (earthing) problem but not sure where to find al the earths (battery strap is OK!) Should there be one from the alternator? Why would it work before without one but not now. I also noticed that the lower engine housing is quite rusty and flaky. Any ideas?
