Codes and Modes (how do you get to modes 2, 3, 4, etc.??) 850

I have Volvo's pocket data booklet ($15 from Volvo). It lists codes in multiple modes for each section (ex: A1 for the transmission shows 6 modes!) I can get the first mode but don't know how to get to the others, if there are any for my car, a '93 850 GLT (an early model I think) therefore no ODB II, the diagnostic tester is in the engine compartment.

Anyone know about this?
