check engine light 850

The check engine light just came on (97 850 soft turbo) Short of taking the car to a shop with a scanner, is there anything I can do myself to ascertain what the car is whinning about? ;) It seems to be running fine. I'm in a rural area and do most of my work "under a shade tree"
