Car suddenly turns off when driving 850 1994

Hi! This is my first post--I drive a 1994 850 Turbo sportswagon. Over the past few months, the car has died--like it is clicking off--while I am driving at around 30-40 mph. I pull over and after 1-2 tries it starts right up again and drives normally. A few weeks go by and it happens again. In one instance, the turning off has been preceded by my gas gauge dropping to zero and the low fuel light coming on (even though I had plenty of gas). Another time we heard a loud pop under the hood and then it clicked off. There is usually no sound or disturbance associated with the car dying--I am driving along and suddenly all my lights come on in the dash and I realize that the engine has turned off. The last time this occurred, the car (for the first time) would not start. Towed it to the mechanic, but by the time they looked at it, it started and ran normally. I have taken the car to my local Volvo mechanic four times now. He cannot duplicate the problem and claims to be unable to diagnose it. I am concerned that if I take it to a Volvo dealer, they will charge me alot of money, replace alot of gadgets and still not fix it. My novice brain says that this is something in the computer or electrical system that for now is intermittent. I am hoping that someone out there has heard of a similar mysterious symptom. This is the kid car in our house so I am getting desperate. Any reactions, brainstorms or thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
