Rattle in resonator V70-XC70 1998

Hello,

My wife's 98 XC has devloped a rattle in the resonator when stopped and in gear. The local independent shop claimed that one of the welds inside had probably come loose and crimping the bottom with a few swift whacks of a hammer would cure it. I let them do it and it stopped for about 8 hours.

Is there another rememdy short of replacement? Did I let them create more problems by knocking other welds loose? Any help is appreciated.
