Rotating tires on the AWD V70XC V70-XC70 2002

I see on the inside of my gas-tank filler door that it says, "Warning! Faulty replacement of tires can do extreme damage to the AWD system" or some such. What exactly does that mean? Also, I live here in Northern Europe, where studded snow tires are legal (and necessary). Will they hurt my nice car? Thanks.
