newbie timing belt question 850 1995

Hi,
I bought a 1995 Volvo 850 turbo today for $4500. It's red and has 97,000MI It has a few things wrong with it, but I have always done my own automotive work. My first question is can you tell if the timing belt has been changed recently? The previous owner recently had it maintained regualarly, but i'm not sure if it has had the timing belt done. If there isn't a way to tell, I guess I'll go ahead and do it to be safe. My second question is how much can I expect to pay for an A/C evaporater. I just need the part, because my friend goes to mechanic trade school, and needs to do a major air conditioning service of some kind to obtain a grade. Thanks for any advice.
