Nivomat Options -855R 850 1996

I just took a peek under my "new" 855R and, indeed, it does have the Nivomat shocks installed.

I am a little confused about what I've seen written about changing them out for other shocks/springs. Most of the information I've seen pertains to the 7xx and 9xx models, not the 850 or "R" models.

I would like to change over to a more performance-based setup. I was looking at the Bilstein HD's, but I'm unsure if this is a viable option with the funky rear setup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
