I bought a used 99 v70 xc with 90k miles. first week i had it the check engine light comes on. no driveability porblems. dealer says it is etm, $800 part, needs to be replaced, etc, and that they need to do a clean out while they are in there. Local guy specializing in volvos says usually just cleaning out something fixes the problem and it is not usually the electronics per se, but even if it is he has used ETM modules that can save money. I have read here that only dealers can download the software for these electronic throttle modules, plus maybe there is updated software that improves acceleration/mileage? Whom to believe?? Is the independent guy right or am I going to have to believe the dealer and shell out some cash??
THANKS!
