Front Suspension Design Question 850

I wonder if anyone can enlighten me with this. I just replaced front struts, spring seats and strut mounts on my 850. everything went smoothly, but I got curious about the front strut assembly design.

When the car is lifted, the large washer on the top of the assembly lowers by some 2-3 cm. When the car is on the road it goes up and creates a substantial gap between it and the strut mount. Does it mean that when the car's front is lifted, the strut assembly disengages from the mount? The mount is screwed to the body with 3 nuts and the strut assembly is screwed to the hub with 2 bolts.

How does this work? Also, after I finish the job, gap between the large washer seems to be larger on one side. I am sure I seated the springs and tightens everything properly. Anyone seen this?
