Reverse lights on a delay? 850 1996

Greetings,

When putting my car in reverse, there's a delay of 3 - 8 seconds before they come on. Strange indeed. I occasionally ratchet the shifter to clean the contacts (hoping to avoid PNP problems).

Ever happened to anyone before? I would assume I need to tear into the console & look at the contacts. Any thoughts?
