Radio Volume Button Problems 850 1994

I have a problem with the volume control button in the factory radio. When I adjust the volume, sometimes the sound goes out on one side and I have to jiggle the button or turn the volume up or down a bit to get the sound back. Is it a loose connection? I remember someone mentioned cleaning the contacts but how do I do this? Anyone with a detailed procedure?
