to buy or not to buy? S80

im looking to purchase a 99 or 2000 s80 t6 , there are some good deals out there, but i am new to the volvo world, i like the way the car looks but im reading alot of bad reviews especially on the 99's. i have driven a couple of s80 turbos and i like the power, is there anything in particular i should be looking for? should i walk away from the volvo completely? what would be a good replacement make? bmw, mercedes?
