Vadis and OBD2 850 1997

My local repairer has just lost status as an official Volvo dealer and they have taken the Vadis computer away but left them with the Volvo hand held scanner to plug into the OBD2 socket.
My question is....does the hand held scanner do all the same functions as Vadis and does it cover current models?
