problems reinstalling transmission 850 1994

We are installing a rebuilt engine and are in the process of reattaching the transmission to the "new" engine. We come within an inch or so and can not get it to side the rest of the way on. What are we doing wrong and/or what are we missing? Thanks for your help Phil
