Q re: 940/850/960 engines 850

OK, I know the 960 has an "interference" engine, and if your timing belt goes, so does your engine. I am also under the impression that the 940 engine is not an interference engine, and if your t-belt goes, it's not that big of a deal. What is the story with 850 engines? I just changed by belt 500 miles ago, so I'm just curious.
Thanks,
Nick

would someone also please explain what "interference" means? I am not a mechanic.
