front engine pulley noise 850

Hi Group:

Our '94 850 Turbo has developed a fairly loud whining noise on the front side of the engine. It sounded like the power steering pump, during inspection with a stethoscope, so I replaced the pump. The noise is still present, and now I'm guessing that it's either the idler or tensioner pulley. The sound really is concentrated near the top of the engine, so I'm reasonable confident it's not the alternator, and since the noise doesn't change with the a/c clutch engaged or disengaged, I've ruled out the compressor. Any way to tell which pulley it is without replacing one or both? Is one more prone to failure? Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Dean
