Driving in the Snow XC90 2004

Wondering if anybody has or is having a bad experience driving their XC902.5T in the snow. I have the factory installed 17" Michelin Synchrones and have read that they are terrible in the snow. I live in New York and the car has been slipping and sliding even after the roads have been ploughed. Don't know if it is the tires or something else, but I am disliking my XC90 alot now. Interestingly, my Passat 4Motion performs much better...Any insights would be welcome. I called Volvo Customer Care and all they said was "Volvo recommends snow tires" and no other owners have complained about this problem...
