I wish to take a second to make all of you stop and think for a second... even less than a second if you wish... because that is all the time it took to nearly remove my existance from this earth.
I owe if not my life, atleast the present state of my physical health to Volvo's safety engineering teams and designers. I was involved in a high speed collision with another vehicle today which nearly turned my S70 into a motorcycle... I came to a drastic stop when both my car and a traffic light standard decided to occupy the same volume of space in time, which is pretty hard for solid objects to do in a 3 dimensional world.
It is incredible what a split second can feel like in this situation... from seeing the car and saying "what is this @sshole doing??" To being shaken up with my car up on the curb... in a snowbank with shattered glass and car parts all over. It was a few seconds of utter shock before I had even realized that the air bags had deployed... I didn't feel a thing. I got out of the car on my own, the doors opened without any indication of a bent frame... the air bags were still puffy and billowing out whips of stinky smoke. My seatbelt tensioner worked as designed... I don't thnk my face even hit the airbag. If it did, I have no burns or brusies to show.
Thank you Volvo for allowing me to see my gorgeous 19 month old daughter's smaile, for the fact that I am uninjured because the car's safety crumplezones, seatbelts, restraints, sacrificed the vehicle so that I can walk away from that mess... guess I'm off to the Volvo showroom this weekend...
It is more than a motto.... "Drive Safe"
RIP 1998 Volvo S70 T5 SE - SILVER 4 Door... you served your owner well... 112,000kms young.
