Changing the voltage regulator on a S40 S40-V40

Hi,

last day my battery started to boil after a long trip on the highway at high speed. The prob comes from the voltage regulator which causes the alternator output to exceed the limit of the battery. My dealer say I need a new alternator because the regulator is part of it. A new unit cost more than 350USD so it's a bit too expensive for my old car. I've seen on VADIS that the regulator has its own part number. Does it mean I can change only the regulator without having to replace the whole alternator unit????? Is it a difficult job (it's seem that the regulator is only bolted on the alternator no?).

THX
