S/E/W switch V70-XC70

What does the S/E/W switch do (the switch located just below the gear selector)?
Also why is there a seperate "TRAC OFF" switch? Why do you need traction control (reverse ABS) when you have All Wheel Drive? That makes no sense to me.
What am I missing?
