Hi,
the never ending story of GL4 vs GL5 :) I know all the differences between both specification etc but what I don't know is what MY gearbox calls for. It is the M5P gearbox which is fitted on phaseI S/V40 with 2.0 normally aspirated engine. This gearbox is built by Renault. I've asked Volvo but they are only able to give me the part number for the oil to be used in that tranny and on the can there is absolutely no specification of viscosity nor GL rating. VADIS also contains no information about this. However I've seen on the web that the M5P tranny use 75W80 GL5 oil. But is it possible to use a syntetic 75W80 GL4 oil instead? The reason for this is even after a recent oil change with recommended Volvo oil, gear changes are still notchy and grindy when cold. I'd like to use Redline MTL which is perhaps the best manual transmission oil available but I'd like to be sure it will not ruin my tranny because Redline MTL is GL4.
Will this cause trouble if I put a GL4 in a transmission supposed to run on GL5?
