My glovebox decided to join the club the other day and locked shut!!
The comments on this site allowed me to fix it and save approximately £100 sterling. thanks for that!
Please read this if it has happened to you.
To get into the glovebox you will need to saw through the small U bracket which is mounted on the dashboard / inner top face of the glovebox. The glovebox door has a small latch mechanism built into it which is what has broken.
I have read the tip of taping the sides of the dash and the door before sawing to avoid having to replace them. A good idea, but it didnt stick as i polish my dash. i still managed to do it without marking the dash however the inner part of the door which you cant see when its shut has scuffs on it (not bad though)
To do this get a junior hacksaw blade, wrap some tape round it so you dont burn your hand when it gets hot. You will need to prise open the glovebox door very hard to expose the u bracket for cutting. You have to be pretty brutal but dont worry the dashboard can take a lot of bending without breaking. I used a large open ended spanner and a socket set ratchet handle to prise open the box. Get your fingers on the other top edges of the door and peel it back, put your lever in and start making your way to the middle part of the door.Bare in mind you need to give it some to expose the u bracket. when you see it insert the blade and start sawing, it is not hard steel so it cuts quite easily, you do need to cut both pieces though. Once you've cut through the bracket hey presto it pops open.
Stick a miniture screwdriver down the side of the support arms on the glovebox door and prise them out (right hand side of each arm). The 2 brackets for the door are covered by the inner cowl of the glovebox, simply remove the screms you can see and this slides out. you can now see the brackets. If you dont have a small torx head driver to remove the screws, use a "bit" and pliers to allow you to remove them (i managed to turn the bit with my fingers on 3 of them) Remove the brackets and you have the door off.
Undoing the screws, strip the back cover off the door of the door and put in your new one. It all goes back together in the same way.
Note put back in the inner cowl of the glovebox before attaching the support arms as these thread through first.
The whole deal was emotional but took approximately 40 minutes and im not that good at fixing cars. Volvo wanted £100 for parts alone plus labour, probably would have been £150 in total but you can do it yourself.
Parts you will need are
Glovebox door
U bracket from behind.
Got my parts from Volvo spares Uk cost me £44.60 (a bit expensive from a scrap yard so look around) remember you only need the inside of the door so it can be a different colour on the outside.
Have fun
