Lighting on shift lever 850 1996

I just bought a 1996 850 and notice that I don't have any lighting on the shift lever that helps me understand what gear I'm in at night. The car is automatic and other lights on center console illuminate. Does anyone know whether there should be lights in the shift mechanism? Any suggestions?
