Hello Everyone,
I hope someone can help me. I have a 1996 850 GLT wagon with a 5 speed manual. The car has 194,000 miles on it. I am the original owner. Approximately 10,000 miles ago, I replace the glove box. The box, which is made of plastic, had seperated from the screws that hold it in place. I installed a Volvo OEM glove box. Shortly thereafter, I started to hear a "metal sounding" type of rattle that was coming from the glove box. I would have to say it seemed to be coming from where the dashboard and the "A" column met. I took the glove box out, and checked to make sure I hadn't "broken anything" and re-installed the glove box making sure all the screws were snug. The rattling noise continued. My independant mechanic, who only works on Volvos, took the glove box out and tried to isolate the rattle. Before I gave him the car, I took him for a ride so he heard what the rattle sounded like and he did hear it.
He couldn't find anything wrong, and the noise seemed to stop, but not due to anything he did. He freely admitted that. I took the car back, and it seemed as though the noise had gone away. Then, a suddenly as it stopped, it returned, sounding exactly as it did before. Sometimes, I won't hear the rattle, for days, and then it is non-stop. Perhaps, it is affected by the outside temperature?
I asked my mechanic if I had screwed anything up when I installed the new glove box, because it was only then, that I heard the rattling noise. He said "No". Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, how did you solve it? Thanks to all who respond. Your help in the past, has helped me to "fix" noises and other problems my independant mechanic could not diagnosis. That is not a criticism of him, because he's great. Just like me, he could use some help. Thanks in advance to all who respond.
Hugh
