magnafine filters 850 1996

Having just done a tranny flush on a 96 850 with Mobil 1, I'm gona install a magnafine filter in the system. The instructions say on older trannys to install the filter in the lower return line from the cooler to tranny. Is this really necessary as the upper hose has more length and room to work? If I were to go with a lower hose install, what grade hose would I use as I would make a "loop" to give myself more room. Is regular 3/8 ID hydraulic hose OK or is it overkill?
