Battery blown S40-V40

I have a 2000 S40 with 84,000. I had a little experience this evening when I went to start my car and I heard a lound pop/bang. It ended up being that the battery had exploded. The cover was completly shot off and some fluid was sprayed out.

I was wondering if anyone else has ever experineced this before. And, if anyone knew whether I had to buy a new battery at the dealership as opposed to a generic one?
