condition of MAF connector.. 850 1995

I looked at my MAF connector first time this weekend since i bought the car and saw that the MAF connector was worn out, the hold where the maf connectors get insterted look larger than they should be . I have never taken connector out before. I am not getting any codes about the MAF connector but the car is not running too well and the gas mileage is real low. could this be efecting the gas mileage... is there always a code for the condition of my connector.Should I just follow BAY13 instructions and fix the MAF connector as mentioned.
