Does anyone have experience with a leaking steering rack on an S70? My mechanic recently traced a new leak to the steering rack and then told me that the whole rack needs to be replaced at a cost of about US$1000.

I wonder why the Volvo engineers built the car this way instead of being able to replace the seal separately.

I would appreciate any comments, for example, should I just leave it like this and just add more steering fluid as it leaks.
