After only limited success with STP's Stop-Leak (slowed the leak for a while, but not really good enough), I've stumbled onto another product that seems much better. I've used something called "Seal Lube" found on eBay. My interest was caught by the amount of eBay feedback to the seller indicating it worked. The stuff is a clear liquid & smells like a volatile solvent. It claims to be designed to re-swell seals. After about a week & 150 miles, all leaking stopped. Not a drop comes out when parked after a trip.
There was one side-effect that seems to be related to the treatment. I found a gooey deposit in the throttle body. My suspicion is that the solvent comes out through the crankcase vent carrying crap with it & can condense at the throttle plate. It was easy to clean out & a minor nuisance compared to the work saved on a rear main replacement.
I've now changed the oil (Valvoline's High-Mileage formula)& the mext milestone comes with getting a 1,000 miles on to see if consumption is down. I'll follow-up with another post then.
