850 turbo wagon won't start-Please help 850

Hi all:

I'd appreciate some advice on a recurring problem that I've had with my 1994 850 turbo wagon (91K miles).

On occasions, the car won't start at all. All lights are on, battery is good. When i turn on the ignition switch, nothing happens. It's dead. The engine doesn't even attempt to start. One dealer thought it was the alarm system, but apparently not. It sure looks like the computer is shutting down the engine and preventing it to start.

The weird thing is that it will start after few hours and will run fine. Since this is my wife's car, I've been driving it (since she refuses to drive it anymore). I drove it for a week with no problems, then in the middle of one day it wouldn't start. I moved the transmission handle back and forth a few times and it worked. Another time, it happened again and I had to move the transmission more than a dozen times for it to work. A third time, it wouldn't start no matter how many times I moved the handle over 2 hours. I called the tow truck. When he came, he tried also but nothing. Then, we pushed the car and got it ready to be towed. I tried one more time and it worked fine. The car has been at the dealer for a week and they say it's working fine so far.

The mechanic thinks maybe it's the ignition switch or the neutral gear switch. He advises to change one or both, but who knows that may not be it.

Any advice would be really appreciate it. Thanks

Fred
