Why should I use synthetic motor oil or atf in my volvo 850? 850

I have seen some folks advocate using synthetic motor oil or atf in their 850. At three to four times the cost of non-synthetic mineral based oils is it worth and if so, specifically why?

I understand that I can leave synthetics in my car for a longer period,however wouldn't the engine or transmission waste products and metal flakes that swim in these super lubricants and cause engine or transmission wear outweigh their longevity?

I would appreciate objective(just the verfiable facts) and subjective comments. Thanks.
