'whining' noise (not the kids!) V70-XC70

I just finished a trip from Ottawa, Canada to New Orleans & back. I noticed a slight intermittent whining noise which occurs at various speeds beginning during the trip down. It is particularly noticeable when the engine is cold. Pitch & volume vary. Does not occur when turning. Occurs on acceleration & deceleration. Accelaration & driving is still smooth. Transmission fluid & oil levels OK.
Any ideas?
