Receiver / Dryer for 1996 850 850

I have a new receiver/dryer in the mail to me and I was all excited about putting it on and thus solving my a/c problem, then I came accross a thread that said

"...to let a shop do the receiver/dryer because it can't be exposed to regular air very long or you'll ruin the receiver/dryer. And the system has to be put on a vacuum immediatley after you open the system and install the new receiver/dryer. So I'll have them put the receiver/dryer in and properly vacuum and recharge the system...."

Say this is not so? My dryer has a rusted hole in the bottom of it the size of clevland and I thought I could wrench it off and put on the new dryer and charge the system. My whole system is completely dry of r134a...I thought vaccuum takes out all the old r134a?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
