hesitation when passing up hill 850 1995

'95 850 turbo wagon, 90K miles -- Has happened twice in last two weeks...engine hesitates when hitting the gas to pass while going up a hill, then check engine light comes on. After getting home, OBDII check shows no codes, but light gets reset (although I'm using the inexpensive Harbor Freight code checker). Otherwise, car runs well.

Any thoughts?
