Lower Gears versus Braking in Mountains V70-XC70 2000

Most of my driving is in the Mountains. When going down hill I use lower gears, often 2nd or 1st gear with my automatic transmission to avoid riding the brakes. I keep the RPM between 2000 and 3000 RPM, often less than 2500 rpm.

Is this good practive interms of the long term maintenance costs. I know is reduces brake wear, but does it cause undue wear on the transmission and/or AWD mechanism?

My 2000 XC has 95,000 miles. I intend to drive it least another 10 years.
