(Posting in this section in case some people read only certain sections)

I bought my S-70 AWD, heated power seats, sunroof,etc., in October, 1999, so it is just finishing its first year out of warranty. Put in new battery, 4 new tires, had alignment several months ago. Last month I had to replace the air mass meter (check engine light diagnostic), the auxiliary drive belt which was cracked, and the cracked and loose top engine mount. The car has just over 26,000 miles, as I commuted by public transportation. I retired last year, so I'm driving a bit more, but expect to drive 7,000 - 10,000/year -- maybe slightly more.

The above repairs were done by a dealer. I plan to use a well-regarded local mechanic who does foreign cars for future repairs. After reading this board and others, I'm concerned about horrendous repair costs in the future, and am thinking of getting a 2004 S-80. But there appear to be many problems there, too -- but at least I'll be under warranty (for a while).

Comments, please?

I love Volvos (this is my 2nd), and I knew intellectually that the maintenance was high dollar -- now I'm learning it emotionally.

I did not get an extended warranty, as I had always believed they were a waste of money. Now that the cars are more sophisticated and more can go wrong, should I reevaluate that position?

Has anyone had any experience with Universal (the one Volvo dealers around here sell once car is out of warranty) or internet ones like WarrantyDirect? Or others?
