850 tdi engine hesitation 850 1996

I have an 2.5 Audi VW engine fitted in my 850 tdi and there is an annoying engine stutter/hesitation going through mid range rev band between 1500-2500
It is usually noticeable on cold start nad only during gentle acceleration. My egr valve has been blocked off.Any ideas for things to check!?
