Odometer Readings 850 1996

I am about to replace a broken gear in the odometer in hopes that it will work again. Is there a way to get the number of engine miles recorded on the OBD II so that I can try and match up the odometer miles with those recorded in the on board computer? Is this something I can do at home, or do I need to pay an mechanic to do it?
