knocking 850, 1996 volvo...please help!!! 850

I just purchased a 850 volvo with 10421 miles ...and when i drive it , it has a loud tapping noise when i press the gas for acceleration ....is something seriuosly wrong with it.....it is not noticeable at other speeds...I put regular unleaded gas not cheap gas though..please help....is my knock sensor not working and if I still drive it will it cause any damage???thanks rick
